It is the severe inflammation of the periodontal tissues of the oral cavity that is chiefly caused by the accumulation of dental plaque. Its major signs and symptoms include bleeding or redness of gums, recurring gum swellings, bad breath (halitosis), gingival recessions, and loose teeth. It leads mainly to excessive pain in the mouth, loss of self-esteem among other problems.
